Top 10 BlackBerry Apps by Laptopmag.com

top10bbapps_sh.jpgPush e-mail isn’t the only reason why BlackBerrys are so popular. Unlike the iPhone, these smart phones are great at multitasking, which means you can run one or more applications in the background. And because BlackBerrys tend to offer longer battery life, you can use your favorite apps longer before having to hunt for an outlet. The challenge, however, is figuring out which apps to install, especially since some of the most compelling programs can’t be found in the BlackBerry App World store.

Here’s our list of the best 10 BlackBerry apps. With these top picks, you’ll be able to listen to free music no matter where you are, find out what’s going on in town, and stay both productive and entertained on the go.

The Bolt browser loads pages accurately, and faster, so that you can view the Web the way you were meant to.

Sometimes the standard BlackBerry browser just doesn’t cut it. The Bolt browser loads pages accurately, and faster, so that you can view the Web the way you were meant to. We loaded Digg.com in the BlackBerry Web browser in 21 seconds, and it didn’t load some of the page’s sidebars like the Top in All Topics section. With the Bolt browser, we loaded the same site in 13 seconds, and it displayed everything. You can also stream video and upload photos and video files to sites like Photobucket and YouTube. Recently added features include copying and pasting text from Web pages, enhanced font rendering, and the ability to order your favorites and arrange them using custom folders.

There’s nothing novel about Facebook on a mobile phone, but the Facebook application for BlackBerry makes its integration with your existing address book tighter.

There’s nothing novel about Facebook on a mobile phone, but the Facebook application for BlackBerry makes its integration with your existing address book tighter. Once installed, you can choose to sync your contacts up with their Facebook profiles, so whenever a friend calls, his or her Facebook picture pops up on your screen. The application also lets you update your own status and view your friends’ posts, as well as upload and tag photos right from your phone. We also like the improved photo viewing experience from within the app. Facebook even leverages BlackBerry push technology, so you get messages and updates in real time. Our favorite feature is the calendar integration; the application reminds you of every Facebook event and of your friends’ birthdays.

Slacker

Price: $ Free

If we have one absolute favorite app, it’s Slacker for BlackBerry.

If we have one absolute favorite app, it’s Slacker for BlackBerry. Like Pandora, this application lets you stream Internet radio for free on the go. But what makes Slacker better is its caching feature, which allows users to store tunes on a microSD Card for listening offline-great for when you’re on a cross-country flight. If you click the Berry button during a song, you can view the artist’s bio and album reviews. The free version permits six song skips per hour-if you stumble across a track you don’t like-and it has a minimal amount of advertisements. A Slacker Radio Plus subscription eliminates the ads, and provides song lyrics and unlimited skips.

UberTwitter Beta

Price: $ Free

UberTwitter is a very easy-to-use Twitter application that offers more features than the competition.

A bit like TwitterBerry, UberTwitter is a very easy-to-use application, but it goes a bit deeper than the previous app. For example, during setup, you can choose to have every update also update your Google Talk status. It also supports GPS tagging, and the ability to tweak the font and size of each tweet. However, this app isn’t as smooth as TweetCaster when it comes to navigation; you have to click the Berry button to view direct message inbox and mentions. Inside that menu you’ll also find My Timeline, Search Twitter, Trending Topics, and more. While you’re writing an update, you can also choose to snap a photo, but there aren’t any URL shortening services available.

Sure, you can get forecasts from sites like The Weather Channel on your BlackBerry, but WeatherEye Mobile puts more information at your fingertips. Once you set your location, the app will display the temperature and current conditions in a large and easy-to-read format. You can also view the current wind conditions, humidity, and the sunrise and sunset times. When you click the Berry button, a menu bar pops up on the bottom of the screen, and you can check the short-term (36 hours) and long-term (five day) forecasts. Our favorite WeatherEye feature is that its dynamic icon changes with the weather to show current conditions. If you hover over it, the temperature and conditions display, too.
