Don’t Be Scared, Be Cautious….

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 13, 2010

Al Sacco, my friend and BlackBerry Guru of CIO, has an excellent article “The Latest BlackBerry Spyware Scare: Don’t Worry Yet“, and it’s about the latest study done with the Proof-Of-Concept and his views on it. While we present you the facts, I try to point out we’re not discouraging you, only urging you to use secure practices with your device. It’s just like a computer, be careful and be educated about it.

Al’s article points out the truths about how the software gets on and that it’s not really hacking which is true. But like the week we got our first computer, or better yet let our young teens on the computer, and everything was downloaded. I had more experience with viruses, trojans, and worms because of that, and I also learned security practices to a T. I can’t remember how many times my firewall would alert me because of a trojan trying to access the internet. I use an anti-virus on my pc only because I don’t want to second-guess sites or have the headache of removing them. I protect my data at home and when I travel. But that’s me.

Al also points out that it’s nothing new, and no reason to run just yet. And it’s true. Studies like these are done to see where weaknesses are and where the vulnerabilities lay. But it’s true, in the study, the software was installed on the BlackBerry. Something I hope most of us would vigilantly guard against with security measures. The Proof-Of-Concept is a study for both experts and consumers, so you can be aware. It’s like everyday caution. Sure, we know we don’t have rich uncles who died in Nigeria, yet the scammers exist and you just don’t answer those emails. The many pictures that came with trojans that even though many people knew about, they spread anyways when consumers opened their emails on their pcs. Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution.

Your BlackBerry is no different. It’s a miniature pc with voice. And I’m not saying that it’s not a concern, but if you password protect your BlackBerry no one can go through it or install malware on it. That was something SMobile has brought up in tips for us. Also I know many of us go happy downloading apps. We never really think about the allow connections or run as trusted app when the alert pops up. We just allow. Don’t assume that your phone is resistant to any malware downloaded, or that it is foolproof. Your device is only as secure as you keep it. So knowing what you’re downloading and thinking about what you’re allowing is something to think about. And SMobile had said to make sure the app you’re downloading is trusted and an official app. Make sure there’s reviews and feedback on it, check the ratings. Be a cautious consumer.

As Al points out for now these apps can only affect you if they are installed on your BlackBerry. And there have been a few around for awhile. The various spyware and trojans are listed on the pdf’s from the previous post. The only reason I post about the security is because I want you to be careful with your BlackBerry and use security practices. Even in your security options you have a firewall you can enable and decide what you want blocked outside your contacts. I bring out the facts so you can read them, see them, and just know what’s out there. Being careful never hurt anyone, I’m not trying to give you concern to panic, just to be aware. I’ll bet you use security practices with your laptop, home pc, and/or netbook, so why is your BlackBerry any different? I’ll be going into security practices with you, including the password protect so that you know what options are available on your device already and using security practices with installation so whether your’re a newbie or someone who’s never given it any thought, just remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I am also including a statement from RIM:

“As a point of clarification to the article titled “BlackBerry spyware source code released”, it is very important that you understand the risk of spyware. Applications containing spyware cannot be installed on a BlackBerry smartphone without the user’s explicit consent unless of course someone gains physical possession of the user’s device along with knowledge of any enabled password. Although it is important for users of all types of computers and mobile devices to always exercise caution before downloading apps, it is also important to understand the context in which the risk of this spyware was described at the conference on Sunday and that the spyware app cannot simply install itself stealthily on to a user’s device. Further,, a user can review and confirm the list of installed apps on their device by looking in the “Options” area at any time.”

Could The Power Of Your Blu-ray Be Coming To Your Pocket Or BlackBerry Soon?

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 13, 2010

I’m really excited over this one. According to, tomorrow pocket BLU will be available for BlackBerry smartphones. pocket BLU is by Deluxe Digital Studios, but BlackBerrySites noted that they received news from Universal Studios Home Entertainment about the pocket BLU and the app will be released and available for select BlackBerry devices and coinciding with availability of Couples Retreat.

pocket BLU allows your BlackBerry to communicate directly with your Blu-ray player to extend your movie viewing experience Iin ways never before possible. It connects seamlessly over a WiFi network, I’m wondering if this only applies to BlackBerry devices that are WiFi enabled. The app is already available for the iPhone and iTouch, and coming to BlackBerry, Android, and Nokia next. The app is a free download.

Advanced features it’s offering are:

  • Advanced Remote Control: A sleek, elegant new way to operate your Blu-ray™ player. Users can navigate through menus, playback and BD-Live™ functions with ease.
  • Video Timeline: Users can easily bring up the video timeline, allowing them to instantly access any point in the movie.
  • Mobile-To-Go: Users can unlock a selection of bonus content with their Blu-ray™ discs to save to their device or to stream from anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi network, enabling them to enjoy exclusive content on the go, anytime, anywhere.
  • Browse Titles: Users will have access to a complete list of pocket BLU™-enabled titles available and coming to Blu-ray™ Hi-Def. They can view free previews and see what additional content is available to unlock on their device.
  • Keyboard: Enter data into a Blu-ray player with your device’s easy and intuitive keyboard that will facilitate such Blu-ray™ features as chatting with friends and sending messages.

I’m curious to see if the app is released tomorrow, so stay tuned. We’ll keep you posted. But feel free to check there too.

You can check their website tomorrow and see if the pocket-BLU download for BlackBerry is there

Leaked BlackBerry Application Suite Professional for Windows Mobile

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 13, 2010

bb-windows-mobile We told you about BlackBerry Application Suite (BAS) Professional back in the day when we first got a copy of the application. Now the crack team at the XDA-DEV forums have scored a copy that anybody can download. Thanks to Wakady for putting it out there.

In case you don’t remember BAS lets you run a virtual BlackBerry OS (4.5 if I remember correctly) on Windows Mobile devices. There do seem to be a few caveats the first being that it looks like this version requires a BES server to work. If I remember correctly BAS was supposed to come out in Professional and Personal version one for BES and one for BIS. Right now only the Professional/BES version has leaked.

Wakady also notes that he installed it on TAEL ROM Standard WM 6.5.1 & runs fine. He could not get past the registration screen without a BES connection.

Anybody with a Windows Mobile device want to give it a spin? You can find it at Mediafire at this link.

BlackBerry Application Suite for Symbian Caught on Camera

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 12, 2010

BAS-Symbian-5700 There has been quite a bit of news related to the BlackBerry Application Suite while I was out on vacation sand surfing in Peru. We heard rumblings last year that RIM was working on a version of BlackBerry Application Suite for Symbian devices. Just like the Windows Mobile version the Symbian version was never released. It also was never caught on camera until the team at MaxPDA caught some video and pictures of a Nokia XpressMusic 5700 running a virtual BlackBerry OS.

I cannot understand why anybody would want to run the BlackBerry OS on a number pad phone but I guess there may be a few people out there. What do you think?

You can view the video of it in action at this link in Chinese (I think)

Google Reader App Unread Now Available for All 5.0 Devices

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 11, 2010

Still no Google Reader app for our beloved BlackBerry devices, but one solution has popped up that appears to be a good hold-over until an official Google Reader app shows up (or if it shows up). Unread was previously only available for the Storm, but has just been released for all devices running OS 5.0. The app is plain and simple, allowing you to view all of your Google Reader feeds, and it even updates read/unread status in real-time. There are a few options for tweaking Unread to your liking, allowing you to get it working to fit your needs. It automatically refreshes feeds in the background, supports full HTML and fully integrates with your Google Reader account. If you’re looking for an app to get your Google Reader subscriptions on the go, Unread may be the one for you. Check it out for $4.99 in the CrackBerry App Store.

5 Step find a lost Cellphone

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 10, 2010

It’s got all of you important contact information, pictures, appointments and is basically your way to communicate with the world. When a cellphone is lost it’s almost as if the world stops and you go into panic mode. In this HowTo I’ll give a few tips on how to handle this problem while incurring the minimum amount of stress.

Step 1

The first thing you’re going to do would be obvious. Call your lost cellphone and listen for it to ring. Hopefully it’s not on silent or vibrate. If you don’t have a land line or another cellphone handy to do this you can go to the website . Here you can put in your number and it will call your phone for you.

Step 2

The next thing you’ll want to do if the first step is unsuccessful is to call Customer Service and suspend your account. This is so that no one else can use it and incur any charges against your account.

Step 3

Now we need to assess the risks. Did you use it to check email, bank accounts, credit card information? Did you save the passwords to these accounts on your lost cell phone? So as soon as you can’t find your lost cellphone you need to go online and change all your passwords immediately.

Step 4

Now with your new cellphone in hand. This can be a STEP 1. Back up all your phone numbers on your computer to a file. Newer phones come with a Desktop Utility software that enables you to back up your phones info anytime by plugging it in with the supplied USB cord. DO THIS anytime you make a new change to your cellphone. I still do it kind of old school and write it on a sheet a paper and put it in my drawer and update it occasionally.

Tips & Warnings

*Back up your cellphone ASAP

*Get a clip or carry case to secure it to your belt

*Check your pockets before you leave and make sure you’ve got it

*If you don’t Have to Have it with you leave it in the car

Replacing the problematic BlackBerry Trackballs

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 5, 2010

Trackball good

No wonder the BlackBerry line of phones are a great pleasure to use. But not all of them! Even the makers at Research In Motion would agree to this given that all the later designs have some improvements in terms of the trackball. If you own those BlackBerry devices where you have the trackball, you pretty well know what we are talking about. Instances of the trackball creating problematic situations are not difficult to find- at times the ball gets stuck completely, at other times it just refuses to click or move in one direction. Surely with the obstinate trackball, using the BlackBerry has become a pain leading to scrolling through the screens and the menus to a mere crawl!

And now thankfully, the people at Research In Motion have realized the difficulties associated with the trackball and are doing away with, making way for the more convenient optical trackpad. The company also does not have future plans to ship the devices with the trackballs. In spite of the difficulties faced with the trackball, if you are the owner of a BlackBerry Pearl 8100, 8120 or Curve 8320 on T-Mobile U.S.A, then there’s news that will make you smile and heave a sigh of relief.

From the 15th of February, you will be able to get rid of the problematic trackball and get it replaced with a new and shiny one. All you need is to walk into a T-Mobile retail store with your BlackBerry Pearl 8100, 8120 or the BlackBerry Curve 8320 and you will be rendered free from the faulty trackball that has been causing so much pain to you. This offer is available only for the owners of the above mentioned BlackBerry device purchased through T-Mobile U.S.A. if you have a T-Mobile Pearl 8220 or a Curve 8900, then this offer is not applicable to you as these devices have a different type of the trackball. Hence they require a much rigorous process for the removal of the trackball.

This offer is really a great one but had it been launched a few months back when the affected BlackBerry devices were the most popular ones. It would certainly have led to a reduction in the pain and people opting for the lesser problematic devices without the trackballs.

Is your Trackball stuck? Try to clean it, here is how it works: How to clean your BlackBerry’s Trackball

Or, get a new trackball replacement and just swap it! :)

Migrating Smartphones: Switching from iPhone to BlackBerry

Posted by freeappsblackberry on February 4, 2010

Something not often talked about is iPhone users migrating to BlackBerry. Customer satisfaction among iPhone users is very high. The reason for such a good score is that relatively little goes wrong with an iPhone. The iPhone is both simple and elegant in it’s software and hardware design, making for a trouble-free, and rewarding user experience.

Apple has build their reputation marketing their products as the “alternative” to the woes of mainstream computing. Throughout the company’s history, there have been several ad campaigns inviting people to switch platforms to Apple. Having a platform focused on ease of use, simple OS design, and a small product lineup has made choosing Apples’ products a “no brainer” kind of choice. To the people who are easily frustrated by traditional computing, it’s a great platform that gives them real piece of mind.

Enter the power user: these are the people with their fingers on the pulse of technology. Blackberry is the ultimate mobile platform for power users. Its rapid-entry keypad, robust multitasking, and utilities are perfectly geared for a quick and lean mobile experience. When migrating from iPhone to BlackBerry you’ll notice a number of fundamental differences, here’s what to expect:

What you’ll miss about the iPhone

The biggest thing you’re going to miss is Apple’s simple and elegant UI. The BlackBerry OS, on the other hand, is a bit finicky. You will become quickly familiar with the term “battery pull” which means there’s some sort of error on your device and the only way to get it working properly again is to fully reset the BlackBerry. Turning your BlackBerry off simply suspends the OS, whereas the battery pull makes the OS restart fresh and clean.

Another thing you’ll miss are some specific apps that you had on your iPhone. As noted in a recent article about the top free and paid apps for BlackBerry and iPhone, you’re going to find the types of apps that are popular on a BlackBerry are very different than an iPhone. In general, the BlackBerry app economy is focused on customization and getting things done, rather than games and party tricks.

What you’ll love about the BlackBerry

The keypad

When I miss a call I usually SMS the caller to let them know I’ll call them later and why I can’t talk right now. My device is usually still ringing by the time I send it. Typing with 2 thumbs on a mobile keypad is somewhere between 30-50% faster than typing on a touchscreen.

Writing in English again

“TTYL, C U L8R @ the mall 8pm?” is all of a sudden: “okay well I’d better be going. Let’s catch up later in the food court okay? I’ll see you around eight!” Maybe I’ve exaggerated my example but my point is you’ll be able to converse with people in a more human way. You’ll also feel more able to converse with someone who’s emailing you from a PC.

Because BlackBerry allows for multi-tasking, you’ll be able to have all your IM clients running in the background. The applications are generally not that resource-intensive making it easy to run many apps in the background. Receiving notifications live as opposed to stopping and switching apps makes all of BlackBerry’s best utilities impossible to use properly on the iPhone.

Sophisticated software

Apple has a lot of rules for 3rd party developers. Not being able to develop software that competes with 1st party apps in any way means that there are whole categories of software that are completely unavailable to iPhone users. BlackBerry on the other hand has 3rd party browsers, media players, configuration software, and themes. Games account for most of iPhones’ sales, while BlackBerry sales are driven mostly by utilities, then themes, then games.

Breaking your screen on a BlackBerry is somewhat of a rarity. I’m reminded of an old timex slogan: “Takes a licking and keeps on ticking”.

BlackBerry Culture

BlackBerry users love BlackBerry Messenger, it is the best mobile messaging system in the world. Anything more on this topic would be considered a “spoiler” so I’ll let you discover it for yourself (it’s that good). When you realize a friend of yours also has a BlackBerry, you’ll both get giddy as you add each other as BBM contacts.

Welcome to BlackBerry.
