Monitoring available memory

To see the approximate amount of available flash memory on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps.

1. On the Home screen, open Options.
2. Select Status.

• The File Free field shows the approximate amount of available flash memory available for data. If you want to make sure that this value is as accurate as possible, restart the BlackBerry smartphone to initiate a full garbage collection. For instructions, see KB02141.
• The File Total field shows the amount of available flash memory after loading the wireless transceiver, operating system, and basic applications.

To see the approximate amount of occupied flash memory on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps.

1. On the Home screen, open Options.
2. Select Status.
3. Display the menu and select Database Sizes.

What is considered low flash memory?

The BlackBerry smartphone’s Java® operating system has a complex and dynamic way of determining exactly how much available flash memory it should have before starting the Low Memory Manager application. To determine if it has low flash memory, the BlackBerry smartphone takes into account a number of factors, such as the BlackBerry smartphone hardware model, the operating system version, the number of installed applications, the frequency at which BlackBerry smartphone user data is added and removed, and so on. Generally speaking, the more the BlackBerry smartphone is used, the more memory the operating system sets aside for normal, efficient operation.

Note: When the BlackBerry smartphone has determined that is has low flash memory, it automatically starts the Low Memory Manager application, which reclaims memory.

The File Free field shows 0

When the File Free field shows 0, it most likely means that the BlackBerry smartphone is full of data. The BlackBerry smartphone determines that it has low flash memory and performs more extensive garbage collections in order to make room for any new data. However, even when the BlackBerry smartphone is full of data, it is designed to operate properly. The Low Memory Manager application starts recovering flash memory when data is added that requires additional flash memory.

How the Low Memory Manager application works

The Low Memory Manager application works to recover flash memory by removing old and unimportant data; when the Low Memory Manager application is running, it does not affect the regular operation of the BlackBerry smartphone, so you are not aware that it is running. The Low Memory Manager application makes requests to all applications on the BlackBerry smartphone to recover memory. However, third-party applications must be specifically designed to interact with the Low Memory Manager application.

The Low Memory Manager application makes requests of the applications on the BlackBerry smartphone in the following order:

1. The Low Memory Manager application first asks all applications to remove low priority data (for example, transitory data such as browser caches).  If step 1 does not recover enough free flash memory for normal operation, the Low Memory Manager application asks the applications to remove medium priority data (for example, very old messages, cached map data, and out-of-date calendar entries).
2. If step 1 and 2 do not recover enough flash memory, the Low Memory Manager application prompts the Messages application to remove email messages starting with those that are the least frequently accessed.

It is a good idea to take active measures to maximize the BlackBerry smartphone’s available flash memory, and thus, prolong the time before the operating system starts the Low Memory Manager application.

The following are suggestions on how to maximize available flash memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Use a media card

Media cards are especially useful for BlackBerry smartphone users who want to store media files like songs, pictures, videos, voice notes, and ring tones, or who want to store pictures they take with the built-in cameras. Built-in video cameras on BlackBerry smartphones require a media card to function.

To make sure the built-in camera is set up to save picture files on the media card, complete the following steps:

1. Install the media card in the BlackBerry smartphone. For more information see KB12882.
2. Open the Camera application.
3. Display the menu and select Options.
4. Set the Store Pictures field to On Media Card. You can also change the Folder setting to the particular folder in which you want to save pictures.

Remove unnecessary items

Removing features and applications that are underused increases the available flash memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.

• Use the Setup Wizard application to remove languages that you do not use from the BlackBerry smartphone. Removing languages is highly recommended because it is one of the most significant ways to increase available flash memory.

To remove languages from the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps.

1. On the Home screen, open Setup Wizard.
2. Select Languages.
3. Select the language you want to use on the BlackBerry smartphone and click Next. The BlackBerry smartphone deletes all languages that you do not select.

• Remove underused applications.

To remove applications from the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps.

1. On the Home screen, open Options.
2. Select Advanced Options.
3. Select Applications. The BlackBerry smartphone takes time to build a comprehensive list of the installed applications.
4. Highlight the application you want to delete, display the menu and select Delete.

• Minimize the number of contacts stored in the Address Book on the BlackBerry smartphone.

One way to minimize the number of contacts stored in the Address Book is to use the remote address lookup feature when you need to send an email message rather than store company contacts in the Address Book. You can use this feature if your BlackBerry smartphone uses BlackBerry® Device Software version 4.0 and later and one of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 3.5 for Microsoft® Exchange or BlackBerry® Enterprise Server version 2.2 or later for IBM® Lotus® Domino®.

Delete old items

The BlackBerry smartphone user can delete old and unused items and also adjust settings so that the BlackBerry smartphone deletes old items as part of its regular routine maintenance.

• Delete Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages that are no longer needed. Because MMS messages can contain large media files and cannot be stored on a media card, MMS messages can use a lot of flash memory. If you do not want to delete the media files in an MMS message, open the MMS message and save the media files on the media card before you delete the MMS message.
• Change the Keep Messages setting on the BlackBerry smartphone to reduce the number of old messages using flash memory.

To change the Keep Messages setting, complete the following steps.

1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
2. Display the menu and select Options.
3. Select General Options.
4. Set the Keep Messages field to either 15 Days or 30 Days.

• Change the Keep Appointments setting to reduce the number of old calendar events using flash memory.

To change the Keep Appointments setting, complete the following steps.

1. On the Home screen, open Calendar.
2. Display the menu and select Options.
3. Select General Options.
4. Set the Keep Appointments field to either 15 Days or 30 Days.

Note: Email messages and appointments are only removed from the BlackBerry smartphone. The email messaging application and the appointment application the BlackBerry smartphone is associated with will retain the email messages and appointments that are removed from the BlackBerry smartphone after the time period that is specified.

• Clear the browser cache often.

To clear the browser cache, complete the following steps:

1. On the Home screen, open Browser.
2. Display the menu and select Options.
3. Select Cache Operations.
4. Select Clear for Content Cache. (You can increase the amount of flash memory by also selecting Clear for Pushed Content.)

Adjust settings for optimal storage efficiency

Adjust the following settings for optimal storage efficiency on your BlackBerry smartphone:

• In BlackBerry® Desktop Software, set messages to stop being forwarded to the BlackBerry smartphone when it is cradled.

To adjust this setting complete these steps.

1. In BlackBerry® Desktop Manager, open Email Settings.
2. Check the check box beside Disable message redirection while your device is connected.

• Set messages to prompt you when deleting an email message on the BlackBerry smartphone. The prompt allows you to choose to either delete the message on the BlackBerry smartphone only or on the BlackBerry smartphone and the messaging server, which deletes the email message on both the BlackBerry smartphone and the email application with which it is associated.

To adjust this setting on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
2. Display the menu and select Options.
3. Select Email Reconciliation.
4. Select Prompt for the Delete On setting. (You can also select Handheld rather than Prompt, which will delete messages on the BlackBerry smartphone without a prompt, when you choose to delete messages.)

Note: If you position the cursor on a date field in the email messages list on the BlackBerry smartphone and select Delete Prior, you will only delete the messages on the BlackBerry smartphone no matter what the setting is in the Delete On field, which leaves the email messages saved in the email application with which the BlackBerry smartphone is associated.

• Flash memory is used to download and display email messages on the BlackBerry smartphone. Set the Auto More option to No to make sure that only the sections of the email message that you want to read on the BlackBerry smartphone are downloaded, displayed, and thus, stored in flash memory. By setting the Auto More option to No, the BlackBerry smartphone displays approximately the first 2 KB of an email message; you can display more of the email message by selecting More on the menu.

Note: If the Auto More option is set to Yes, scrolling automatically displays more of the email message. Be aware that you may be dowloading large email messages by scrolling through an email message on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Note: The size of the entire email message is displayed at the bottom of the email message screen. Average messages are usually no larger than 2 KB.

By setting the Auto More option to No, you can make sure the flash memory is not unnecessarily used on the BlackBerry smartphone by disallowing the automatic download option.

To set the Auto More option to No, complete the following steps:

1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
2. Display the menu and select Options.
3. Select General Options.
4. In the Auto More field, select No.

Caution: The More All option on the menu gives you the choice of downloading the entire email message at once, no matter how the Auto More setting is configured.

The More All option should be used with caution since the BlackBerry smartphone uses flash memory to store email messages that have been displayed.

• For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software version 3.8 or 4.0, set the BlackBerry smartphone to allow content compression. Although content compression causes the BlackBerry smartphone to work harder (thus, using more battery power), it will make sure that email messages use the least amount of flash memory that is possible.

To set the BlackBerry smartphone to allow content compression, complete the following steps:

1. On the Home screen, open Options.
2. Select Security Options.
3. Select General Settings.
4. Set the Content Compression field to Enabled.

Need to wipe your device using javaloader or JL_Cmder but don’t want to lose all your 3rd party apps? Backup/Restore in Desktop Manager won’t do it. Here is a way to back them up and restore them. Note: It wouldn’t be a bad idea to do this on a routine basis just incase your device gives you the unexpected hourglass screen of death requiring you to wipe the device.

• Download and install the latest version of Desktop Manager 4.2 from here
• Plug in the device and run Desktop Manager.
• Click on “Switch Device Wizard.”
• Click on “Switch Blackberry Devices.”
• Click “Next.”
• Select USB: Your Pin.
• Click “Next” and then enter your password if required.
• Uncheck “User Data and Settings” and “Include Messages” leaving only “Third Party Applications checked.
• Click “Next.”
• When it’s finished backing up the apps, DO NOT click “Next” or “Cancel.” Leave that screen as it is and continue these instructions.
• Search your computer files/folders for a folder labled with your pin number. Be sure and search in hidden and system files. Hint from BBF member NextelUser: Open Windows Explorer or My Computer and type in %temp% to find your temp folder with the folder labeled as your pin number.
• When you find it copy it to another location.
• Now go back and “Cancel” the Switch Device Wizard. If you cancel the wizard before copying the folder to another location the folder is automatically emptied.
• Now wipe your device as desired. Your backup is complete.Restore:
• When the OS has been loaded back to the device run Application Loader again and click on “Add”
• Browse to the folder you copied with your PIN. Double click on the file named yourpin.alx.
• This should add all your 3rd party apps to the apploader.
• Finish the installation to load them to your BB.
• After the 3rd party backups have been restored, move, rename or delete the folder you pointed to using the “Add” feature in DM. Failure to do so will cause subsequent backups to skip any application that was contained in the original backup. See the note below.
• Restore your personal data using the restore feature in Desktop Manager Backup/Restore

Note: If you are wiping the device because of a problem this procedure may not be wise to perform because the cause of the trouble could possibly be in one of the 3rd party apps.

Note: If you ever use one of these backups to restore an app or multiple apps back to your device you’ll need to move the folder to a new location after restoring. If you leave it in the same location then the next time you perform this backup procedure any apps included in the original will not be backed up in the temp/yourpin folder since they are already recognized by Desktop Manager as being in another location. So, after restoring your app(s) simply move the pin folder to a new location, rename it or delete it.

How to Maximize Free Memory Space on Your BlackBerry for Better Performance

Just like your desktop and laptop your BlackBerry’s performance can be significantly impacted by too much junk cluttering up the memory. So, you have to occasionally clear things up to help maximize performance.

What Causes Decreased Performance?

BlackBerries based on Java depend on what is called File Free Flash memory for most of the device’s tasks. Cluttering up that File Free Flash memory can lead to delays in many tasks as the device is spending an inordinate amount of time recovering blocks of memory, called “garbage collections.”

These Java “garbage collections” automatically reclaim file space that is no longer in use by the operating system. This process will also move around memory that is in use to combine free memory into larger memory blocks. A laptop, for example, will exchange memory onto the hard drive when it is running out of RAM. In a similar way, when the BlackBerry runs out of SRAM space, it is designed to swap memory out to the Flash memory. But if the Flash memory is also full, then the BlackBerry cannot perform that task effectively, which then causes more frequent and longer garbage collections.

The best solution to this problem is to free up space on your BlackBerry

Freeing-Up Space

Perhaps the easiest thing to do is regularly check the available memory on your BlackBerry. To do this, click on the ‘Options’ application and select “Status’ from the drop down menu. The ‘File Free’ display shows you the current amount of free data storage. The ‘File Total’ section tells you how much storage space remains after loading the Operating System, the phone, and the other basic applications.

For optimum performance it is recommended that you maintain a minimum ‘File Free’ of 400 to 500KB. This isn’t necessary, but you will find your BlackBerry performs much better if you can maintain this level.
Here are six simple solutions.

Delete Old Messages

One easy way to free up a lot of space is to delete old messages. You can change the ‘Keep Messages’ setting on the BlackBerry to 15 or 30 days, which will reduce the number of old messages taking up space in the memory. To do this, go to the ‘Messages’ application, click the trackwheel and select ‘Options.’ From that screen, click ‘General Options’ and change ‘Keep Messages’ to either 15 or 30 days. You should be aware that the BlackBerry will begin deleting older messages automatically when the memory gets low.

Change Appointments Settings

If you use your Calendar a great deal, then you might want to think about changing the ‘Keep Appointments’ setting to 15 or 30 days in order to avoid old calendar events taking up space. To change this go to the ‘Calendar’ application, click the trackwheel and select ‘Options’ from the menu. In ‘Calendar Options’ change the ‘Keep Appointments’ setting to either 15 or 30 days. This will not affect recurring appointments because the BlackBerry regards them as a single appointment.

Clear Browser Cache

Much like a regular computer, it is important to clear the browser cache often. Go to the ‘Browser’ application, click the trackwheel and select ‘Options.’ In the Browser Options screen, select ‘Cache Operations’ and click on ‘Clear Content Cache.’ This will clear the various caches.

Remove Unnecessary Applications

Remove any applications that you do not use. Most people have a few applications or programs they never use – the Memo Pad or a third party game program for example. By removing unused applications you leave more data space for applications that you use regularly. To remove unnecessary applications, click ‘Options,’ select ‘Applications’ from the menu. Scroll to the application you would like to delete, click the trackwheel and select ‘Delete.’

Slim Down Your Address Book

If it is possible, access addresses from your corporate directory. Software version 4.0 includes a Remote Address Lookup feature, which accesses contact info from the corporate address directory instead of including them in your Address Book. This feature is also available for devices that are enabled on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 3.5 or later for Microsoft Exchange, or BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 2.2 or later for IBM Lotus Domino.

WTLS

You may also wish to get your IT person, or if you are brave enough yourself, to verify that the Optional Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) Support component is not installed on your BlackBerry unless your service provider requires it to access their Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) infrastructure.

2. Max Memory (Remove unneeded modules like PTT, media files etc)

MaxMem can clean up your BlackBerry from unused applications, themes, and files that come preinstalled, which you might otherwise not be able to get rid off. Enjoy more memory and slightly faster speed.

Feature:

• MaxMem free up BlackBerry memory by deleting unused COD files that are preinstalled from the BlackBerry operating system. Currently, there are 9 remove modules in the newest MaxMem release, version 0.3.
• Up to 5MB of free memory can be realized after running MaxMem.
• Pop up approval notice for every COD file that will be deleted.
• Remove VAD (Voice Activated Dialing) – Usually activated by pressing the default assigned left convenience key. Make call by using voice recognition. The About item in the Option will also be deleted because it is located inside the VAD. BlackBerry OS and build can still be seen by pressing ALT+SHIFT(left)+H together on the keypad.
• Remove PTT (Push To Talk) – PTT is available on AT&T network only (As far as we know) and is preinstalled in AT&T BlackBerry device. So, if you are going to use the device on other networks, you can delete this feature to save more space.
• Remove T-Mo Fives – Normally found on T-Mobile device. The feature is usually consisting of icons, etc.
• Remove MDS (Mobile Data Service) – MDS is only used by BES user to push data from their BES enabled server. Delete this if you are on BIS network.
• Remove Media – Delete media like default wallpapers, music, and videos.
• Remove Default Themes – This module removes vendor themes except Dimension Zen. Note: some custom-made themes depend on vendor themes to work so don’t use this option if you like to install custom-made themes.
• Remove TID – (Experimental) Delete linguistic data used by SureType, SpellCheck, etc.
• Remove Foreign Resources – (Experimental) Delete language translation.
• Remove RIM Internal Tools – Remove quincy, bug report, battery log, etc. RIM Internal Tools usually comes in package with beta operating system that RIM used to monitor the OS performance remotely. Delete this if you are not officially approved to use the beta OS.

User Guide:

1. Install MaxMem
2. Back up BlackBerry device using desktop manager.
3. Set your current theme to Dimension Zen. The purpose is to avoid any error if the current theme is accidentally deleted. Dimension Zen can’t be deleted by MaxMem.
4. Run the MaxMem application (Mammoth icon).
5. Click on the remove module that you want to use. Make sure you read the definition above for each module.
6. Question 1 is about data base back up. Answer yes only if you have already backed up your device or you know what you are doing.
7. Question 2 is about disclaimer. Answer yes if you agree.
8. Question 3 will be asked for each cod file that MaxMem will delete.
9. Restart after you are done.

Note:
COD files that are deleted by MaxMem can be restored by running application loader from desktop manager but you do need to install BlackBerry Handheld OS first in your computer.

Masalah paling sering yang dihadapi BB kita semua adalah MEMORY.
Yang bikin BB kita lemot-lambat, jam pasir, ga bisa masuk website dll.

MEMORY disini saya maksud adalah ‘volatile memory’ ya(semacam RAM di PC).
Bukan ’storage memory’ seperti media card contohnya.

‘Sampah’ memory ini bisa diakibatkan dari :
1. Conversation yang tidak ditutup (BBM, YM yang dibiarkan ‘open’).
2. Memori ‘history’ website2 yang dikunjungi browser.
3. Memori ‘log event’ (‘rekord’ otomatis dari ‘event’2 di BB-nya).
4. Terlalu banyak buka aplikasi bersamaan.
5. ‘Cookies’, ‘Cache memory’, yang mempercepat proses tapi menghabiskan memori.

Ada baiknya kita mengetahui cara2-nya selain cabut batere.
Kita mulai dengan BB anda di posisi ‘desktop screen’

(1). CACHE CLEANING.
Bersihin ‘cache memory’ browser BB:
1. Masuk/ klik ke browser.
2. Tombol BB menu – klik.
3. Pilih : ‘Options’ – klik.
4. Pilih ‘Cache Operations’ – klik.
5. Klik ke 4 tombol ‘clear’ (termasuk ‘clear history’).
6. Termasuk ‘Yes’ untuk ‘delete pushed content’.
7. Selesai.

Weits, jangan buru2, kita bersihin yang lain lagi yah.

(2). EVENT LOG CLEANING.
Bersihin rekord dari ‘event’/proses di BB.
(kayak blackbox gitu?CMIIW).
1. Dari desktop (lagi), pencet tombol ALT (tahan).
2. Pencet huruf L-G-L-G (berurutan).
3. Kemudian BB menu – klik.
4. Pilih ‘clear log’ – klik.
5. ‘delete’ – klik.
6. Selesai.

Tau nggak, bahwa BB juga sudah dilengkapi dengan ‘memory cleaner’?
Ada, tapi dia ter’sembunyi’ , mari kita keluarkan dia (start desktop homescreen ya).

(3).MEMORY CLEANER.
1. ‘Options’ – klik.
2. ‘Security Options’ – klik.
3. ‘Memory Cleaning’ – klik.
4. Status ‘disabled’ di klik.
5. Pilih ‘enabled’.
6. Lalu 4 baris dibawah menu ‘memory cleaning’, Ada ’show icon on home screen’ klik jadi ‘Yes’.
7. Tekan tombol ‘return’ dan ’save’ changes.
8. Kembali ke ‘homescreen’ dan cari ikon baru ‘memory cleaner’.
9. Gambar ikon-nya, mirip2 printer gitu, nah klik!
10. Selesai.

Catatan :
Ikon memory cleaner akan ada di homescreen, silahkan klik kapan saja anda perlu bersihin memory.

Ikon tsb. ada selama BB anda tidak di restart. Kalau di-restart, maka kita akan ‘keluar’kan dia dengan cara seperti diatas.

(4). CABUT BATERE :

Cabut batere, adalah tip yang paling sering dan ampuh juga.
Cuma kita harus tau, bagaimana yang benar melakukan cabut batere.

Supaya tuntas, katakanlah kita telah melakukan 3 langkah sebelumnya tadi.
Yaitu: Cache cleaning, Event log record cleaning dan Memory cleaning.
Kemudian biar ‘bulet’ dan ‘pas’, mau sekalian reset atau/dan cabut batere.

Bisa pilih a.RESET atau b.CABUT BATERE.

a. RESET : Tekan bersamaan ‘Alt’ – ‘Caps’(kanan) – ‘del’
Ini namanya restart (reboot kalo di PC), ada yang bilang ’soft reset’.

b. CABUT BATERE : Matikan BB – cabut batere – pasang lagi.
Ini juga restart, ada yang bilang ‘cold start’.
Sama saja seperti diatas, lalu apa bedanya ?

Dengan ‘cabut batere’, kita benar2 memastikan tidak ada energi/listrik
yang tertinggal. Karena dengan tidak adanya listrik, otomatis yang namanya
‘volatile memory’ (memory ada jika ada suplai listrik) akan hilang.

Ketika cabut batere, minimal 2 menit, baru kita pasang lagi yaa.
Kenapa? Ketika batere dicabutpun, masih ada ’sisa’ tenaga listrik di HH yang
akan redup/padam perlahan2. Jika ’sisa’ tsb. belum hilang, dan kita pasang
batere lagi, nyuss, ’seger’ lagi dia dan ‘memory sampah’-nya ga jadi ilang.

Bedakan ya ‘volatile memory’ dengan ‘memory card’ dimana datanya ‘ditulis’ dan ada terus biarpun ga
ada suplai tenaga listrik.
